The number of missing people in the Nepal and China floods has reached three thousand

🔸Officials in Nepal and China announced that the number of missing persons in the devastating floods in the Himalaya region has reached nearly three thousand, and so far the bodies of 633 victims have been found.

🔸The flood, which began on Wednesday, the 4th of Shahrivar, following the collapse of a natural glacier, sent a massive surge of water, ice, rocks, and mudflows toward villages, bridges, and hydropower plants in border areas of Nepal and Tibet.

🔸In Nepal, 626 people have been killed and 2,426 others, including hundreds of foreign nationals, have gone missing. Chinese officials also reported the deaths of seven people and the disappearance of more than 550 people in the Gyirong area of Tibet.

🔸Many of the missing are Hindu pilgrims on the route to the sacred mountain of Kailash and employees of hydropower plants. The Nepalese army is also trying to rescue more than 100 people trapped in the Trishuli hydropower plant tunnel.

🔸Search and rescue operations were suspended on Saturday due to rainfall and thick fog in parts of Nepal. The formation of temporary lakes upstream and the risk of natural dams breaking again have also made rescue workers’ work more difficult.

🔸The Government of Nepal has requested foreign technical assistance for rescuing people trapped in tunnels, identifying victims, conducting genetic tests, and rebuilding roads and communication networks. The country’s finance minister estimated the cost of rebuilding the areas devastated by the floods at four to five billion dollars.
