The New York Times, citing two diplomats familiar with the negotiations, wrote that Qatar is drawing up a plan for a five-day agreement between the Islamic Republic and the United States, which would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting the blockade of Iran’s ports, and obtaining a nuclear concession from Tehran. Disagreement over the timing of the commitments is the main obstacle to the deal.
The newspaper wrote on Monday, 4 Aban, that based on the proposed framework of the Qatari mediators, Tehran and Washington, over a five-day period, would each give a series of concessions to the other.
According to these two diplomats, within the framework of this agreement, the Islamic Republic would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels, while the United States, in return, would lift the naval blockade of Iran’s ports, which has exacerbated the country’s economic crisis.
The two diplomats said the biggest obstacle to reaching an agreement is disagreement over the timing of the execution of each side’s commitments.
According to them, the mediators are also trying to persuade the Islamic Republic to give a concession regarding its nuclear program in the first stage of the agreement.
The New York Times did not provide further details about the nature of the nuclear concession the mediators are seeking or the proposed order for implementing the commitments.
