The New York Times, citing officials of the Islamic Republic and Iraq, reported that the Iranian government on Thursday rejected a ceasefire proposal that had been conveyed to Tehran by Iraq’s prime minister.

After the publication of this report, IRNA, citing an informed source whose name it did not disclose, called the account “completely misleading and deceptive,” and emphasized that “the Islamic Republic of Iran has always valued diplomacy.”

According to the New York Times report, Ali Al-Zaydi, Iraq’s new prime minister, carried a proposal from Donald Trump during a trip to Iran, but the Islamic Republic has no interest in a temporary agreement that would leave the issue of control of the Strait of Hormuz unresolved.

The Iraqi prime minister traveled to Tehran after his recent meeting with Trump at the White House.

This unsuccessful attempt at mediation took place as Trump has threatened to intensify the war and target Iran’s vital infrastructure.
