The mayor of the city of Bordeaux said he is preparing himself for “any possible eventuality,” because one of several wildfires currently in France has now reached a distance of 15 kilometers from this city in the southwest of the country.

Thomas Cazenove said: “We are putting facilities in place to accommodate a large number of people, so that we have the necessary readiness if an order is issued to evacuate additional areas.”

Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, during a visit to the Gironde region, which has been hit by extensive wildfires, said the country is facing fires that are “completely unprecedented,” describing a situation that is “the most difficult conditions since World War II.”

So far, about 220,000 people in France and more than 100,000 in Spain have been evacuated due to the “out of control” wildfires in the west of Madrid.

Another severe heatwave on Tuesday could make efforts to contain the fires even more difficult.

Macron said that a smaller fire in the “Landes” region has been contained, but firefighting operations in the neighboring region, Gironde, are still
