🎥 The guard tower of Gohardasht Prison was demolished; a prisoner linked to the executions of 67

The walls and guard tower of the former Rajai Shahr prison, known as Gohardasht, were completely demolished; the prison whose name is associated with the mass executions of political prisoners in 1988 (۱۳۶۷), and whose closure process began in 2023 (۱۴۰۲).

Islamic Republic officials have stated that the prison’s closure is due to its removal from the urban fabric of Karaj and say that its 60-hectare plot will be prepared for new urban uses.

In 2023 (۱۴۰۲), Deutsche Welle reported that some former political prisoners and families of prisoners considered the transfer of detainees to be an action that would make it harder for families to visit and to gather in front of the prison.

The report also, by referring to Gohardasht’s history in the 1988 (۱۳۶۷) executions, described its closure as the shutting down of one of the sites of a crime whose scope has still not been fully clarified.
