The attacker behind the LGBTQI+ pride parade attack in Berlin was shot by police and killed. German police arrested Abdul Balut and, in the end, found him in the leafy neighborhood of Spandau on the outskirts of Berlin. Police say he attacked the officers with something resembling a knife, and they shot at him. According to the German Interior Ministry, evidence indicates that the motive for the attack was “Islamist terrorism.”
Abdul Balut was accused of, on Saturday in Berlin, driving a van into the crowd at the pride parade and then stabbing, killing a woman and injuring 29 people.
Some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
The 21-year-old suspect, who had Lebanese descent but was born in Germany, was known to police and had a record of several arrests.
According to German officials, he had been previously detained after returning from Lebanon and in prison was required to take part in a deradicalization program because of efforts to join ISIS.
