Syrian President: The Golan Heights will remain Syrian territory

🔸Ahmed al-Sharaa, President of Syria, on Wednesday, on the first of Mehr, said in a speech that the Golan Heights would “remain” Syrian.

🔸Al-Sharaa, who is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, said: “Any attempt to violate our territorial integrity, to violate international laws, will be stopped. The Golan will remain Syrian territory.”

🔸The Syrian official’s remarks come after a new position announced by the right-wing government of Colombia, which last month recognized Israel’s claim to the Golan Heights.

🔸In 1967, Israel captured the area in Syrian territory, but until now the United States was the only country to recognize the annexation of the Golan to Israel.

🔸The United Nations also continues to consider the Golan Heights as belonging to Syria and “under Israeli occupation,” a position that UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated again last July.

🔸Last autumn, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, visited Israeli forces stationed in the area around the Golan Heights and called their presence for his country’s security “very vital”; remarks that were met with harsh reactions from Damascus and a number of regional countries.

🔸According to AFP, on Wednesday, al-Sharaa also condemned Israel’s recent 500 attacks on Syrian soil.

🔸Senior Syrian and Israeli officials held talks in Jordan on Sunday, on the first of Shahrivar, with American mediation. The aim of these discussions was described as easing tensions after recent Israeli attacks on Syrian territory.

🔸According to Syria’s state news agency, SANA, the talks focused on finding mechanisms to stop Israeli attacks, arrests, and targeted operations in Syria, and to resume talks to reach a security agreement. The two sides also discussed preventing the spread of competition between Israel and Turkey into Syrian territory.
