The president of South Korea said the country will not intervene in the U.S. war against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which could potentially draw Seoul into the conflict.

According to Yonhap news agency, Lee Jae-myung said during a press conference that his government will take minimal measures to protect South Korean commercial ships and oil transit routes.

His remarks come a day after the South Korean foreign minister said on the matter: “No decision has been made yet, and we are reviewing all relevant factors.”

Choo Hyun, speaking with reporters before his departure for Washington, added: “In this process, we will prioritize international cooperation while at the same time focusing primarily on the security of our people and on the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

In August, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would reduce military exercises with South Korea because the country has refused to join the United States’ military efforts in Iran.
