🔶 Sharp drop in ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after attacks on oil tankers

Data from Kepler, a company that monitors and tracks ship movements, indicates a sharp decline in the number of vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz after attacks on three ships managed by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

According to a report by Reuters on Saturday, August 15 (24 Mordad), only five cargo-carrying vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz, and on Sunday the number declined further to the point that no transits were recorded.

This comes as the number of vessels passing through at the end of last week was 31. However, this is also likely because ships may have passed through the strait with their tracking systems turned off, and thus are not included in Kepler company data.

Before the start of the war between the United States and Israel with Iran, more than 130 ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz each day, and one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas cargoes were transported through this route.

Reuters, relying on Kepler company data, also reported that on Saturday and Sunday (August 15 and 16), 49 vessels passed through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
