🔻Shabana Mahmoud, the UK Home Secretary, has said she is willing to review her proposed plan to make the conditions for obtaining permanent residency more stringent.

The remarks were made after pressure from a number of Labour Party lawmakers, including Angela Rayner, and from labor unions. Critics believe that some of these changes are not fair for migrants who entered the UK legally.

One of the most important proposals is to increase the period required for most migrants to obtain permanent residency from 5 years to 10 years. Under the plans discussed, this period could be extended to 15 years for some holders of visas related to health and social care status, and to 20 years for people who have used government benefits for more than 12 months.

Angela Rayner had previously criticized the plan for “changing the rules of the game midstream”; particularly because it could change the situation of people who entered the UK legally under the previous rules.
