🔶 Several-hour disruption in Italy’s air traffic; 192 flights canceled
Disruption in the data transfer network of Italy’s air traffic control organization on Friday, October 16, caused flights to face problems for several hours. The disruption affected both incoming and outgoing flights from Italy, as well as aircraft that were transiting through this country’s airspace. Flights between Italy and Germany were also affected.
According to Italy’s air traffic control organization, known as “ENAV,” from 6 a.m. it put measures in place to manage air traffic, which led to a reduction in the number of aircraft that could be accommodated in this country’s airspace. The organization initially ruled out the possibility of a cyberattack or sabotage, but did not provide an explanation for the exact cause of the disruption.
Gaetano Intrieri, the CEO of “Aeroitalia,” blamed the problem on worn-out infrastructure. He told the Sky TG24 television network that over the years there has not been sufficient investment to renew infrastructure and technologies.
