Saudi Arabia’s state oil company announced that the first shipment of crude oil for its new refining complex in China has arrived. Based on an Aramco statement on Wednesday, the Saudi crude oil shipment arrived last week at a facility in Liaoning province in northeastern China.

The complex includes a refinery with a capacity of 300,000 barrels per day and a petrochemical plant with an annual capacity of 1.65 million tons of ethylene and 2 million tons of paraxylene.

Zheng Baoming, CEO of North Huajin Company and one of the partners in the project, said that the arrival of the first shipment is an important milestone and brings the project closer to the start of operations.

To reduce the impact of this war, China has cut crude oil imports, drawn down its reserves, and temporarily halted fuel exports.

In a note, Eurasia Group wrote that state-run China’s refineries will add 400,000 barrels per day to their reserves from next month until the spring. Eurasia Group added that China’s strategic oil reserve, equivalent to 120 days of imports, has remained untouched.
