🔻Saudi Arabia confirms that Yemen’s Houthis attempted to target Riyadh, the capital, with a ballistic missile.
This is the first attack on Riyadh since fighting with the Houthis resumed. Saudi Arabia says the missile fired at Riyadh was “intercepted and destroyed.”
However, various news agencies reported that some residents of Riyadh heard the sound of an explosion, and later also saw a column of smoke near the airport.
The French news agency also reported that in Riyadh on Saturday, two loud explosion sounds were heard, and its reporters saw an Aramco fuel tank near the airport that was on fire.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy on September 11 (20 Shahrivar) temporarily suspended operations on the East–West crude oil pipeline. The day before, the pipeline was targeted by drone attacks that Saudi Arabia said had taken off from Iraq. The Houthis control a large part of Yemen and have recently also taken over nearby coastal cities adjacent to the Bab al-Mandab strait and its islands.
On Saturday, the United States warned that the war could “escalate quickly.”
