A statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, the older brother of Israel’s prime minister, was unveiled in Uganda. He was killed 50 years ago during a hostage-rescue operation at Entebbe.

The commander of the Ugandan army, General Muhozi Kainerugaba, said the memorial was built to honor his courage and sacrifice.

Yonatan Netanyahu was the only Israeli soldier killed in that operation, which rescued more than 100 hostages.

Two Palestinians and two Germans had hijacked an Air France plane, diverted it, and taken it to Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport.

The statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, showing him moving forward with a machine gun in his hand, has been installed outside the old airport building, where the operation took place.

In the operation, the hijackers and three of their accomplices who had joined them in Uganda were also killed; at least 45 Ugandan soldiers who were fighting alongside the Israelis were also killed.
