Reuters reported that the U.S. Navy’s submarine drone ended up in Iran, providing the Islamic Republic with an opportunity to examine its technology and possibly reverse-engineer parts of it; an incident that constitutes a setback for the Pentagon and for its manufacturer, Anduril.

The U.S. Navy said the vessel was of the older “Dive-LD” type and that, after a technical malfunction, Iranian forces found it. The autonomous vehicle was designed for long-range reconnaissance and underwater missions.

Palmer Luckey, the founder of Anduril, said this drone had operated in the CENTCOM operating area for months before it was taken, completing thousands of mission hours.

Reuters wrote that the Islamic Republic has previously reviewed American equipment for reverse engineering. Analysts said it was unlikely this drone would give Tehran a decisive military advantage, but that the Islamic Republic could examine its hardware and mechanical systems and use them for reverse engineering.
