Protests over the renaming of Mīmeh in Isfahan province turned violent with police involvement.
On social media, images of an assembly and clashes between police and protesters have been shared.
Following a government resolution, Mīmeh has been upgraded from a district to a county, and its name has been changed to “Mīmeh and Vozvān.”
Residents of Mīmeh, in response to the city’s name change, took to the streets on Sunday.
The protesters oppose the merger and renaming of the city, stressing its historical and geographical background.
As night fell and police intervened, the march turned violent.
It has been reported that officers, to disperse the demonstration, resorted to tear gas and fired into the air.
