Around 3:00 a.m. on February 24, 2022, thousands of satellite modems across Ukraine and Central Europe stopped working. A few hours later, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
Kerry Bingen, director of the Aerospace Security Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in the United States, says: “The first attack in the Russia-Ukraine war wasn’t the entry of tanks into Ukrainian territory, but a cyberattack on a commercial satellite system that was later attributed to the Russian state.”
“Why did they do such a thing? They wanted to undermine the ability of the Ukrainian army and government to communicate.”
In modern wars, the first bullet may not be fired from a gun or a missile, but in the form of a stream of malicious codes—codes that target satellites orbiting the Earth.
