Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, said Donald Trump is still ready to reach a deal with Tehran that “would allow Iran to be what it should be; namely, a great and prosperous country.”

Rubio said the Islamic Republic’s insistence on “a desire to obtain nuclear weapons” and “support for terrorism” prevents reaching such an agreement. He added that if this process continues, Trump would have “multiple options,” including further military action.

The U.S. secretary of state also said Washington cannot simply leave behind and declare victory in a war with the Islamic Republic, and must ensure that the Islamic Republic never gains access to nuclear weapons.

Rubio said: “That the world’s largest supporter of terrorism has access to nuclear weapons is by no means acceptable.” He added that many members of the United Nations voted in support of this principle in the past.

He said Trump’s efforts to contain Iran’s nuclear program are not limited to last year’s bombing of the country’s nuclear facilities, and the U.S. president “is thinking about the next generation.”
