🔶 Lavrov travels to Tehran for a working trip and meeting with Iraqi

Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced on Friday, 24 Mehr (16 October), that Sergei Lavrov, the country’s foreign minister, will travel to Tehran on Monday, 19 October, on a working visit and will meet and hold talks with Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, Zakharova said at a press briefing that the meeting will examine current international and regional issues. She added that the talks between the two foreign ministers will focus in particular on the situation around Iran and on Russia’s actions to reduce tensions.

Zakharova did not explain how Russia intends to help reduce tensions. This comes while Russia launched its war against Ukraine in February 2022, and the war is now entering its fifth year and has become one of the main factors behind tension between Moscow and Western countries.

Lavrov’s trip is taking place as reports have been published about alleged covert military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.
