سمیه گلپور، labor activist and former president of the Supreme Council of Iranian Workers’ Professional Associations, said that despite a resolution by the Supreme Labor Council to adjust wages in September based on the inflation rate of essential goods, September has ended and no changes have been applied.

She told Mehr News Agency that in an economy with very high inflation, it is not possible to keep wages in rial terms unchanged for 365 days, and she expected workers to have basic livelihood and productivity.

Golpur called for a solution of moving away from “political and imposed bargaining at the end of the year” and establishing a wage indexation system; a mechanism that automatically links wages to the real inflation rate and changes in the cost of the household welfare basket.

She said that more than 70 percent of the wages of the labor force are directly spent on rent.
