They summited Everest dozens of times in total and achieved feats that were once thought impossible; including reaching eight-thousanders without the use of supplemental oxygen and climbing K2, one of the world’s deadliest mountains, at the height of winter.

But beyond these achievements, the six Nepalese who recently died in an avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak contributed to raising the profile and recognition of Nepali mountain guides—the Sherpas—in the world; guides who previously were often only seen as climbing assistants.

Among the deceased was Nirmal Purja, a proud climber with the British-Nepali honor, who had become best known—more than others—for summiting 14 of the world’s highest peaks, with elevations above 8,000 meters, in just over six months.
