Jeff Borthos, the U.S. representative for UN management and reforms, criticized the four-year extension of Volker Turk’s mandate and said that the UN’s human-rights mechanisms have lost their credibility for decades.

On Friday, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to continue Turk’s mandate.

Borthos accused him of condemning Western democracies, especially Israel, but taking a different approach to human-rights violations in Cuba.

He also claimed that Turk remained silent for 12 days after the crackdown on protests began in Iran, but quickly condemned U.S. actions aimed at preventing the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear weapons.

This comes as Turk, in his statements, has condemned the crackdown on protests in Iran in Dey and, on 23 Dey, had urged officials of the Islamic Republic to immediately end violence and the crackdown on peaceful protestors.
