Israel closes British consulate in Jerusalem over West Bank sanctions

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced on Thursday (October 8) that the British consulate in Jerusalem is "ceasing operations".

Israel ordered the closure of the consulate in September, after the British government led Western sanctions over violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Seven British diplomats have been allowed to remain in Israel. The UK says they will continue to offer "vital services" and forward their "work with the Palestinian people".
