Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it carried out an attack on two oil tankers in the waters of southern Iran overnight.

In a statement, the IRGC Navy claimed that the two oil tankers—which, disregarding warnings, were moving through the “unsafe and illegal route” for transit through the Strait of Hormuz—were hit and stopped, while four other oil tankers changed course and returned to their destinations.

So far, no international body has confirmed the IRGC’s claim.

The U.S. Central Command “CENTCOM” on Thursday had called the IRGC’s verbal threats against ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz along “free and open” routes “words and lies.”

In its Friday statement in response to CENTCOM’s statement, the IRGC said it had informed all shipowners of shipping and insurance companies that they should not pay attention to CENTCOM’s announcements and should ask those who were “tricked and had an accident.”

Over the past months, the Islamic Republic has attacked dozens of ships in the waters of its south and claimed “control of the Strait of Hormuz.”
