🔶 Is Iceland restarting negotiations to join the European Union?
People in Iceland today, Saturday, August 29 (September 7), are taking part in a referendum that asks whether the country should restart negotiations with the European Union to join it.
Supporters of EU membership have begun a renewed effort to bring their country into the bloc. That is why Icelanders will vote on whether to resume talks with the European Union.
After the financial crisis, Iceland had launched negotiations on EU membership once before, starting in 2009. The then-government halted the negotiations in 2013. At the time, disagreements over fishing policy were among the main reasons for the pause.
