🔻 Iraqچی’s letter to the UN Secretary-General about the broad U.S. sanctions against Iran

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, in a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, condemned the sweeping U.S. sanctions against Iran that were announced two days ago, calling them “an operation of economic terrorism.”

In the letter, he wrote that after “failure” in two wars against Iran and after “failure” in persuading other countries to join the war, the United States decided to pursue its policies “by applying pressure and coercion to participate in an economic terrorism operation.”

He described the aim of this U.S. action as “putting an end to lawful economic relations with Iran.”

He added: “This action imposes collective punishment by deliberately depriving access to food, medicine, medical equipment, energy, and other essential needs.”

Mr. Araghchi wrote in his letter: “Ask the United States to immediately stop its threats and coercive actions that are designed to compel third countries and their nationals to change their lawful economic relations and interests.”

Two days ago, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, at a press conference, announced the details of the largest economic campaign against the Islamic Republic, calling the operation “economic expulsion.”

The U.S. treasury secretary named five key areas in these sanctions, and those areas include cryptocurrencies, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping.

In response to the remarks by Iran, the new U.S. economic pressure program against Iran was described as “a recycled claim,” and it was said that Iran is prepared for “any scenario.”
