Iran’s repressive institutions shut down two cafes, “Emarat Mansha,” on Nofel Loshato Street, and “Kama,” at the intersection of Sahrvardi and Abbasabad, in Tehran.
Meanwhile, a large ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of Ahmad Shamloo’s birth—scheduled to be held alongside the publication of a new collection of his works by Cheshmeh Publishing—was canceled. The organizers said the cancellation of the ceremony was carried out “by order of officials,” but no further details were released about the issuing body or the reasons behind it.
The Islamic Republic has increased pressure on cafes, bookstores, publishers, and independent literary and arts events, expanding the scope of government restrictions into more areas of citizens’ cultural and social life.
