Iran plays a key role in ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz, in terms of geography and international law, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

"Iran plays a key role in ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz. It is underpinned simply by geography as well as the existing international law system, in particular the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and other international documents. And I think Iran does a good job in this role,” Medvedev argued.

Russia would like the Hormuz and Ban el-Mandeb straits to function normally, Medvedev added. "But everything should be done based on normal, full-fledged agreements rather than by force,” he concluded.
