India’s refineries may reduce purchases of Russian oil shipments for delivery in Aban after the U.S. signs a new law imposing sanctions on Russia.

According to Bloomberg, the biggest Indian refineries have begun a serious search in recent days for alternative cargoes.

The law allows Donald Trump, the U.S. president, to impose up to 100% tariffs on the goods of major Russian energy buyers within 30 days. India is the largest buyer of Russian seaborne oil.

Based on data from Kpler, India’s imports from Russia in Mehr could reach about 1.9 million barrels per day.

Replacing this volume is not easy. Russian Urals oil was fetching about $133 per barrel for delivery to India at the end of last week, while Oman and Murban oil were several dollars more expensive.

New Delhi has said that its purchasing decisions are driven first and foremost by the need to secure affordable energy for the country’s population of 1.4 billion.
