🔶 Hungary takes its nuclear power plant offline due to the drop in Danube water levels

Péter Magyar, the Prime Minister of Hungary, announced in a Facebook post that the country will fully shut down the Paks nuclear power plant on Sunday, 11 Mordad (2 August), because the level of the Danube River has fallen to the lowest point in history.

Hungary uses water from the Danube River to cool its nuclear power plant. The plant generates nearly half of the country’s electricity.

The decrease in water levels, caused by ongoing drought, has also disrupted shipping activity on the Danube and has harmed the tourism sector.
