🔸 Human rights groups file a complaint against Trump over sanctions imposed by the ICC

Human rights groups have filed a complaint against Donald Trump, the U.S. president, over his sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) and said these measures prevent victims of war crimes from accessing justice.

The Associated Press reports that Trump’s administration, which rejects the jurisdiction of the ICC, has imposed travel bans and blocked the assets of several judges and prosecutors of this institution who, “mostly because of their investigations into Israel, a key U.S. ally.”

In a lawsuit filed in a court in New York, four human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, say these sanctions should be lifted because some laws, including the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution concerning the protection of freedom of speech, are violated.

The lawsuit states: “This action constitutes an unlawful abuse of power and an overtly aggressive assault on the rule of law, the independence of judges, prosecutors and counsel, the fundamental principles supporting the international legal order, and the principle of equal access to justice.”
