🔶 Hackers’ extortion attempt after a widespread attack on Berlin’s state network

Kai Wegner, the mayor of Berlin from the Christian Democratic Party, confirmed that following a cyberattack on the state network, an attempt was made to extort Berlin and that the hackers sent a ransom demand.

Wegner said on Friday, August 28 (6 Shahrivar), after an extraordinary meeting of the state government of Berlin: “The state of Berlin has become the victim of a serious crime.”

According to him, the ransom demand was received in the early evening of Thursday, at around 5:30 p.m. However, Wegner stressed that he did not pay attention to it and that “the state of Berlin will not submit to extortion.”

On Thursday, Berlin-Brandenburg Radio Television (rbb) had reported, citing several informed sources, that a ransom demand had been sent to the state of Berlin. It is still not clear how much was being demanded.
