🔸 The organization “Global Witness” said in a report that at least 124 land and environmental defenders were killed worldwide in 2025; a figure that brings the number of recorded deaths and disappearances by the group since 2012 to 2,375.

🔸 According to this organization, 85% of recorded killings took place in Latin America.

🔸 With 39 deaths, Colombia was the deadliest country for environmental and land defenders for the fourth consecutive year, and Brazil also ranked second with 26 deaths. Honduras and the Philippines recorded 12 cases each, Mexico 10, and Guatemala eight murders.

🔸 More than three-quarters of the victims were smallholder farmers, Indigenous people, or people of African descent.

🔸 Global Witness said that more than half of the killings were linked to land disputes, and at least one-third were attributed to organized crime or hired killers.

🔸 The organization stressed that the real figures are likely higher, because it may not be possible to record and verify all cases.
