A set of household basket items with a 30% discount; that is, $90 in savings each month and more than $1,000 a year. It sounds tempting, doesn’t it?

This is what New York City is aiming to achieve with the opening of city-run supermarkets—stores designed to lighten the burden of costs on residents of one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Based on a survey that New York City has cited, nearly 9 out of 10 New Yorkers believe that the cost of food has increased faster than their income.

Zehraan Mammadani, the mayor of New York, who describes herself as a “democratic socialist” and won the election with proposals of this kind, announced that these stores will offer their goods with a 30% discount and provided more details about the plan.

In the first phase, five city supermarkets are set to be launched in New York—one in each of the city’s five main boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.
