🔶 Eritrean forces enter Ethiopian soil; the country asked the United Nations for help
The Ethiopian government has announced that Eritrean forces, Ethiopia’s neighboring country in East Africa and located on the Red Sea coast, have entered Ethiopian territory by up to 60 kilometers. In a letter to the United Nations Security Council, the Ethiopian government emphasized its right to defend the country; a development that has increased concerns about a renewed outbreak of wide-scale fighting between the two countries.
After reports were published about Eritrean military forces entering the north of the country, the Ethiopian government asked the United Nations for support. Gideon Timotheos, Ethiopia’s foreign minister, wrote in his letter to the Security Council that Eritrean forces have advanced up to 60 kilometers into Ethiopian territory. He emphasized that Ethiopia reserves the right to defend itself against what he called an “all-out invasion.”
Eritrea previously rejected reports about its forces entering Ethiopian territory and said that the Ethiopian government, by raising these claims, is seeking to justify the start of the war.
