«Economy of survival»; Why does the Islamic Republic deliberately keep people poor?

“Economy of survival” means the goal is not to improve people’s lives; the goal is to keep the machinery of government running, even if the lights in people’s homes go out. For war, there is always money for the military and security institutions and the network of loyalists; but people must choose between food, medicine, and rent.

War and sanctions play a role in making people poorer; but it is the Islamic Republic that continues its tension-creating policies, passes the costs of those policies onto the people’s tables, and sets aside the remaining resources to preserve the structure of power.

Cambiz Hosseini discusses this topic on “Barnameh” (Program).
