🔻Donald Trump, the U.S. president, says his decision to suspend some Russian sanctions was aimed at keeping Moscow in the negotiations.

Mr. Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social on Sunday: “I’m negotiating to bring peace to the war between Russia and Ukraine.” He added that he does not want “to keep Russia out of the negotiating table with an unwise move.”

Trump on Friday evening, just two days before a package of sanctions against Russia was to take effect, blocked their implementation; a move carried out at the same time as tensions in his disputes with Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, escalated.

In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Mr. Zelensky said that aligning with Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, would be “a historic mistake.”
