🔻Diesel fuel prices in the United States have approached a new and worrying turning point for the transport industry, and experts warn that higher fuel costs could have widespread effects for consumers, as companies are likely to pass higher energy costs on to the prices of goods.

According to data from the EIA (Energy Information Administration), the average price of a gallon of diesel fuel in the U.S. reached $5.98 on Thursday, up from $3.71 a year earlier—an increase of 61%.

Diesel fuel is widely used in trucks and freight trains, and rising prices could increase the cost of moving goods across the United States. The construction and agriculture sectors also have a significant dependence on diesel fuel.

Meanwhile, the GasBuddy institute, which tracks fuel price changes in real time, said diesel prices have crossed the $6 mark per gallon—a figure recorded in U.S. history for the first time.
