The Deputy Prime Minister and Italy’s Foreign Minister, in a meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, said that the Islamic Republic’s acquisition of nuclear weapons is “unacceptable” for Rome.

On Tuesday, Antonio Tajani, after meeting Abbas Araqchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, told reporters: “We have an open dialogue with Iran, but I emphasized to Araqchi that the construction of nuclear weapons by Tehran is unacceptable for us. This is our fixed position, but we are ready to host other dialogues as well, as we previously did at the Omani embassy in Rome.”

According to Tajani, Araqchi repeated that he is ready for dialogue in order to reach an agreement and end the war. No specific date or timetable was announced.

Tajani added: “Araqchi told me he is here to make diplomacy win and that they do not fear confrontation, even military confrontation. I told him I hope diplomacy always wins, and that these days, in the United Nations, it will help bring positions closer. But it is clear that the situation remains complex.”

During the meeting, the Islamic Republic’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the Houthis’ control of the Bab al-Mandab, and the situation in Lebanon were discussed.
