Denmark welcomed a deal that, according to Donald Trump, gives Washington “permanent” control of Greenland’s security and keeps Russian and Chinese bases away from the Arctic island.

The Danish foreign minister wrote on social media that “next week could be a good week,” adding: “We hope a long period of uncertainty will give way to a binding agreement that strengthens security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic.”

Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the agreement respects Denmark’s “red lines” and, given the “important” shift in the security situation, is “important.”

On Thursday, Greenland, Denmark, and the United States had said in a joint statement that they would sign the agreement on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, and after the signing, the necessary parliamentary processes would be carried out to implement it.

Since Trump returned to the White House in December 2024, he has repeatedly said that the United States must control Greenland for strategic reasons.
