🔶 Court temporarily suspends use of a crocodile in an Israeli high-security prison

A court in Jerusalem (al-Quds) temporarily halted the implementation of a plan to use a crocodile around the high-security Ketziot prison. Under this ruling, until a final decision is issued, the transfer of crocodiles to the moat around the prison is prohibited.

The Jerusalem District Court on Sunday, August 2, issued a temporary order instructing Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s Minister of National Security, to refrain from using a crocodile for the protection of prisons where Palestinian detainees associated with his terrorism-related policies are held.

The decision followed a complaint filed by an animal rights organization. The organization had called for a review of the classification of crocodiles as a “protected species” and argued that Idith Silman, the Minister of Environmental Protection, ignored the views of legal experts as well as Israel Nature and Parks. The organization also claimed that the government did not have the necessary legal authority to carry out such a plan. The court, by issuing a temporary order, granted the request.
