CNN: With the help of the U.S. Navy, Saudi oil companies, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE have chartered tankers that turn off their transmitters and transport oil from the Persian Gulf, through the Strait of Hormuz, to the Sea of Oman.
There, they deliver their crude oil to the waiting tankers belonging to their customers, and then return again through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to an assessment by the U.S. Department of Energy, this strategy has been effective. The ministry says that the passage of oil through the Strait of Hormuz has averaged 8 to 9 million barrels per day.
