Chile police arrested Nelson Hase Massiei, a retired army colonel, who had been evading justice for years after being convicted in a kidnapping and murder case.

In 2023, the 80-year-old soldier was sentenced to a total of 25 years in prison under a final ruling. The ruling was issued due to his participation in the killing of Víctor Jara, a Chilean singer and songwriter, as well as the kidnapping, torture, and murder of Littere Kiroga Carvajal, then head of the General Directorate of Prisons.

Víctor Jara, a prominent figure in the “New Chilean Song” movement and a professor at the state technical university, was killed on September 16, 1973—just five days after the military coup against the government of Salvador Allende—at the Chilean stadium (which is now named the “Víctor Jara Stadium”).
