🔻Based on a letter from Hong Kao, the acting U.S. Navy Secretary, which was received on Wednesday by CBS News—BBC’s business partner in the United States—since the deployment of the record-breaking aircraft carrier “Abraham Lincoln” and its strike group began about 10 months ago, eight instances of attempted suicide among sailors of this carrier group have been recorded.

CNN was the first outlet to report this letter. CBS News also contacted the U.S. Navy to request an explanation regarding this matter.

The deployment of the Lincoln and its roughly five thousand-strong crew came to attention after last month members of the sailors’ families and a number of members of Congress expressed concern about the living conditions on this ship and the mental health status of its personnel.

After the start of the U.S.-Iran war, the Lincoln carrier and its strike group were deployed to the Middle East. Since then, the carrier has left the region and is returning to its base in San Diego.
