In Italy, remarks by Antonio Tajani, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister of the country, saying that “a woman who is suitable for marriage should wear a long skirt” have sparked widespread controversy.

In response to these statements, opposition politicians posted photos of themselves wearing skirts on their social media, and 11 female senators from opposition parties attended a session of the Senate in an act of protest with “mini-skirts.”

On Friday, 18 September, during a ceremony, Antonio Tajani said that women who “attract attention” may not be reliable and may have less loyalty. He also said that for this reason it is better to marry women who “wear longer skirts” and “attract less attention.”

Tajani went on to say that a woman who has “stunning” beauty may have changed her emotional partner multiple times or betrayed him. He also claimed that “a woman who attracts less attention can be more trustworthy and turn out to be a better mother.”
