🔻Australia’s foreign minister summons Israel’s ambassador
Penny Wong, Australia’s foreign minister, says she is “outraged” by the Israeli government’s decision not to prosecute those responsible for the death of Zomi Frankcom, an aid worker who was killed in an attack by the Israeli army.
Ms. Frankcom was an Australian aid worker who worked with the relief charity “World Central Kitchen” (WCK) and was killed, along with six other colleagues, in an Israeli airstrike in April 2024 in Gaza.
The Australian foreign minister said, “This decision falls far short of the accountability we expected,” and emphasized that she would summon the Israeli ambassador.
On Thursday, Ms. Wong said in a statement that Australia would continue to pressure Israel to “deliver justice for Zomi and her colleagues.”
She added that the Australian government learned of the Israeli government’s decision late Wednesday night and said the decision was “particularly insulting,” given that it was adopted on World Humanitarian Day.
Ms. Wong said: “This is despite the Israeli army’s acknowledgment that the attack on the vehicle carrying Zomi and her colleagues was the result of serious failures in following military procedures, mistaken identification, and errors in decision-making.”
