Do you also wash it before cooking the chicken? This is a question that has sparked heated debates in families, among friends, and on social media for years.
Official food-safety recommendations in Western countries are clear on this: do not wash raw chicken meat, because it causes disease-causing bacteria to spread.
But many cooks around the world do this, and it is a long-standing cultural practice linked to the concept of cleanliness and care.
Some cooks, such as April Jackson, a television chef and writer, enjoy discussing the matter on the internet.
She says: “I especially post clips where I’m washing chicken meat, because I know this is a hot topic right now. People say I shouldn’t wash chicken meat in the kitchen sink or a bowl, and some say it’s disgusting and contaminating.”
But others believe eating unwashed chicken meat is unhygienic.
