As the final days of the deadline for a deal between Iran and the United States approach, the Trump administration shows signs of greater focus on increasing economic pressure on Tehran. A change that Bloomberg described as a significant shift in U.S. government policy following recent threats to expand military operations against Iran.

A White House official told Bloomberg that sanctions and a naval blockade have left Tehran financially “completely bankrupt.” According to the official, Trump also has other tools to apply pressure on Iran and can use them over the coming months. The official did not provide further details about these tools.

Bloomberg writes that the U.S. administration’s renewed focus on harming Iran economically is a reminder of the “maximum pressure” policy from Trump’s first presidential term. This approach has gained prominence while, just days earlier and after about six months of war, the U.S. government had pointed to the possibility of expanding military operations against Tehran.
