Armenia’s president emphasized the need to reopen the Zangezur Corridor, known as the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity,” and said that this project creates mutual benefits for international and domestic communications in the country.

He, referring to the opening of Azerbaijan’s rail lines for Armenia in August last year, said that an unobstructed connection between Azerbaijan’s main part and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through the territory of the Republic of Armenia must be established, and Armenia will also connect through this route to Central Asia and China.

Over the past years, the Islamic Republic has strongly opposed the opening of the Zangezur Corridor and says that this project removes Iran from the international transit route. Azerbaijan is currently located on the main route of the East-West Corridor (China–Central Asia–Caucasus–Europe), and reopening the Zangezur corridor will add 10 million tons annually to the transit capacity of the East-West corridor.

The memorandum of understanding to reconstruct the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” project was signed in the United States last August, concurrently with the signing of the peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku, with Donald Trump acting as mediator.
