Antonio Tajani, Italy’s foreign minister, wrote on X on Wednesday in a phone call with Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, about ongoing negotiations between the Islamic Republic and Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping.

Tajani said he emphasized the importance of continuing the talks to quickly reach a political solution, including with the United States, and to prevent further escalation of tensions. He added that ensuring full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, without fees or restrictions, is essential for regional stability and the global economy.

The Italian foreign minister also said that the call included discussions about Lebanon, and he expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations in Rome will lead to tangible results for stabilizing the ceasefire and reaching a comprehensive agreement.

Tajani added that he told Araghchi that the role of the Islamic Republic in halting the military actions of Hezbollah is decisive, and that Italy will continue its efforts to advance dialogue, security, and peace in the Middle East.
